  2. Poorly assembled, the one I bought did not work. I exchanged it and the second worked for several workouts, then stopped working. I exchanged that one, and the third works when I can get a battery to stay in it. The battery does not fit properly, and will often pop out, knocking the battery cover loose in the process.

When it really works, it is marginally useful.

  3. A total waste of money. You can’t hear the bell even if you have it clipped to your body, the vibration feature didn’t work and the timer has a mind of its own. I smashed it with a pipe wrench and felt excellent afterwards.

  4. I’ve used this product for at least a dozen workouts now, without any problems at all. The main reason I’m giving it 4 instead of 5 stars is because I find the buzzer to be TOO loud and unpleasant—would much prefer a simple loud beep rather than a fake electronic imitation of a boxing bell. The arm strap is not a fantastic thought if you’re boxing, it eventually slides around with the force of your punching and of course if you’re sparring, getting hit on the timer can hurt the timer as well as your arm. I’ve been using the belt clip most of the time, and it works fantastic for that.

*** NOTE: Of the 17 reviews giving this product 3 or fewer stars, the vast majority of them were one or two sentence reviews, and only FOUR were from reviewers having more than 2 reviews to their credit. I find that extremely suspicious, just as I would if all the 4 and 5 star reviews came from people who had only 1 or 2 reviews to their credit…reckon about it, what are the odds that such a high percentage of people who bought this product from Amazon and felt compelled to review it were all Amazon newbies or reviewer newbies? Usually this is a dead giveaway of some hanky panky going on…certain merchants and manufacturers now have farmed out part of their marketing budget to folks who sit and write bogus Internet reviews gushing about their product while slamming those of competitors.

Bear in mind that until this product came out, if you wanted to buy a boxing timer you’d have to fork out at least $100 for a professional boxing timer in some huge heavy metal box. So there are CERTAINLY some vested interests being threatened by a product that does the same thing yet is this shockingly inexpensive.

So, my advice is take these lopsided, cursory reviews with many grains of salt. The technology behind a digital countdown timer is ridiculously simple, it is very unlikely that anyone would make one as terribly as these reviewers claim Everlast has. And my experience with this product has also squarely contradicted those claims.

EDITED 2/6/09: took this thing into my local 24 Hour Fitness for some post-lift skipping, and I have to say that it wasn’t simple to hear the bell chime above the din of machines, people, and terrible music. So I had to wear it clipped to my shorts, which was ok. I still wished they’d gone with a simple shrill beep-chimer, but I guess their marketing department figured the bell chime would seem “better” in a store when people are trying it out.

  5. As a loyal Everlast customer I was very disappointed when my timer developed glitches after just a few uses. The bell stopped working, settings would change on their own and then it just stopped working.

I have been using a Gymboss timer for a few months now and it is more versatile and better quality for about the same price. Get one of those and save yourself the aggravation.
